Super Critical Boiler To Reduce Carbon Pollution And Enhance Energy Efficiency

Former President Obama’s Climate Action Plan outlines a wide array of actions that the administration has to perform in order to reduce carbon pollution, enhance energy efficiency, expand renewable and other low-carbon energy supplies and strengthen resilience to extreme weather and climate conditions. The Climate Action Plan is a credible tool that strengthens the US’ response to climate change.

In response to the needs to reduce carbon pollution and enhance energy efficiency, innovations in boiler technology introduce super critical boiler that indicates use of high temperature and high pressure inside the boiler chamber as opposed to traditional boilers that burn fuel to generate steam that spins the turbine blades.

Due to the extremely high pressure in super critical boilers, pressure can reach up to 3,208 psi/221.2 bar or more. In these conditions, water reaches a stage that is called super critical stage that is neither liquid nor gas instead of turning liquid to gas. After passing through a condenser, the substance will cool down and turn to steam or water.

Unlike the traditional boilers, the super critical boiler does not use drums but it has the capability to evaporate water in just one pass through an evaporator, super heater and feed pump. The technology of the super critical boiler is considered to be more efficient than a traditional boiler using Rankine cycle.

The technology of the super critical boiler improves thermal efficiency from 38% to 42% of the traditional system. The technology also makes use of special alloys that can withstand high temperature and pressure that can be used for power generation. Instead of using traditional boilers that run at 2400psi/1000oF, power generation can use the super critical boiler that runs at 3900psi/1100oF.

The use of the super critical boilers will minimize pollution during the power generation process with a 4% improvement in thermal efficiency. This means lower fuel demand for a similar amount of power generation and less pollutants like carbon dioxide and mercury.

In order to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce pollution, suggests proper preventive maintenance on boilers. Regular servicing will ensure that the boiler is in good working condition to minimize emissions of carbon dioxide into the environment.
