On a beautiful Friday day, former president Obama and wife Michelle had lunch with U2 front man Bono at a Stephen Starr’s New York restaurant Upland. The former first couple looked relaxed and fashionable with Obama wearing a suit and crisp white shirt sans tie while Michelle was in a grey coat over a black and white shirt.
The trio sat at the private dining room downstairs but as Obama walked out the restaurant, everybody stood up, applauded and cheered for them. The former president was seen with his signature smile while waving at the people as he made his way out of the eatery. The Secret Service was everywhere so that people immediately knew who was on the restaurant.
This is not the first time that Obama visited Stephen Starr’s Upland because in 2015, he brought his two daughters Maila and Sasha to enjoy the restaurant’s most favorite item, the $21 cheeseburger. The California-style burger includes two beef patties that are covered with melted cheese and topped off with lettuce, avocado, tomato and peppadew peppers. The burger is only served during brunch and lunch and it is entirely possible that the president wanted to have a taste of the much-loved dish.
Post White House life is quite busy for the Obama’s. After enjoying a brief vacation at Richard Branson’s private island in the British Virgin Islands, the former first couple is now settling into domesticity at their 8,200 square foot home in Washington D.C. They are done negotiating and signing publishing deals for their White House memoirs. They have also attended meetings for the former president’s library and foundation.
Back in 2011, former president Obama invited Bono and Alicia Keys for lunch at the White House’s dining room; Bono played the guitar and sang “Norwegian Wood.” In 2013, Michelle her daughters had lunch with Bono and his family at a pub in Dalkey.
