It was very obvious that President Obama was impatient to return to Washington to cram as many activities as possible into his remaining days as president. While standing at the door of the Air Force One, Obama was heard shouting to former president Bill Clinton to get on board. Obama has a few months left to his presidency but before he leaves office, he wants to bring together the people who have helped him through two White House terms.

Throughout the years, about 200 or so of the people who were invited to the Illinois reception have already attended receptions at the White House. This Illinois homecoming is quite special because aside from the big donors, supporters who have helped Obama gain 2 terms at the oval house were present. It was a terrific moment for the early supporters of the president many of whom helped during Obama’s US Senate bid. One example of the early supporters includes Women for Obama that was organized during the 2000 campaign.

Don Shoman managed Obama’s 2000 Senate bid. He was among those who organized the reunion of former colleagues. Anita Decker Brekenridge who met Obama while he was still a senator is now the White House Deputy Chief of Staff. Brekenridge will oversee the president’s post-presidential portfolio. John Bouman the president of Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law has worked with President Obama on poverty issues since he was a senator. Valerie Jarrett, the White House senior adviser and Tina Tchen, Michelle Obama’s chief of staff have been with the couple from day 1 and will stay up to the last day of the presidency.

People at the reunion were nostalgic and a little melancholic because they know that in a few months the president’s term will be ending. It was a terrific moment because most of the supporters have earned their way into the inner circle with sweat.
